EMBOSSING STENCIL PASTE & CHALK PAINTING RATTAN

Embossing Stencil Paste is a must have, multi-use product that has earned its stripes in my art toolbox. If you haven’t already tried Embossing Stencil Paste – you should!

Predominantly, the L’essentiel Embossing Stencil Paste was created to make decorative raised stencils. Raised stencils look amazing on furniture and other decor items. Oh and let’s not forget in journals and artistic collages.

How to make a raised stencil?

Raised stencils is a technique where you ladle an even paste over a stencil. When lifting off the stencil, the Embossing Stencil Paste leaves a raised appliqué. When dry, this can then be painted or antiqued with great affect.

Coloured raised stencils

Have you thought about coloured raised stencils? That is an option too. You can add Botanics paint to the stencil paste to tint it. Just ensure you don’t dilute the thickness too much.

EMBOSSING Stencil paste has other handy applications!

While experimenting, I have found other handy uses for Embossing Stencil Paste . It is wonderful in preparing furniture with damaged surfaces. Check out the video tutorial below for a demonstration.

Stencil paste as a filler

Embossing Stencil Paste can be used as a fine filler for wood and other material. It will easily cover the imperfections of chipped paint, small dents and fine cracks. It is easy to sand back to a smooth finish too and works well with chalk paint and mineral paint.

The technique I share in the video shows how, when combining with wood glue, you can create solid fill to control smoother finishes – prepping after the first coat of paint.

This is a different approach to repairing blemishes and saves time. (A commodity we all need more of)

Good preparation

I’m not an advocate for ploughing over every flaw on a project piece just because I’m using a chalk or mineral paint and it may stick. I don’t think it’s excuse for sloppy application. For most of us, character in a chalk painted piece is part of the appeal, but we still need to be integral to the end result. That being a refurbished (as new) bespoke piece.

Good preparation becomes a balance of character and considerate repair, when your project looks authentically old, but also honours the word refurbished.

For this reason, I used the wood glue in combination with the filler in a way I felt it was most secure and would last a long time. I’m sure my customers appreciate these added touches and I certainly do on my own furniture.

EMBOSSING STENCIL PASTE by L'essentiels

Embossing Stencil Paste is possibly strong enough in most cases on its own, but I like to know that I know, that I know, that I KNOW nothing will fail the new owners in the near future.  We don’t want stuff cracking off or shifting with movement do we?

Without stripping the paint back to bare wood, you’ll see by the video example that this Embossing Stencil Paste technique solves another common problem – how to successfully cover chipping paint work.

The beautiful Victorian style stool I’m working (once sprayed in and enamel paint) had cracked and flaked substantially.
